Wow, this is big!

This is giant knitting.  It’s not just throw rug size; it’s carpet-sized.  My guess is that the gauge is six stitches per FOOT.

Christien Meindertma is the knitter, having yarn spun from individual sheep (much like us mundane spinners do all the time), then knitting it into award-winning items (many of them "normal" size).  Her site, FLOCKS, has many pictures of her completed items.  Click on the flock of sheep for more pictures of the cabled carpet, including one of her knitting on 12 foot long needles.
